Elements and Principles of Design

Kathryn Grimm

The elements and principles of design are around us at all times. For this assignment we went out and took pictures of the elements and principles in our everyday lives.
Color
This photo is of the pool balls at my church. Each one is vibrant in color and each color varies. You can see each ball clearly due to the vibrance of each individual color.
Movement
This photo was taken at my house of pages flipping through a book. Movement can be seen by the blurred paper and words near the top of the pages.
Texture
This photo of a tree trunk was taken on the NSU campus. Tree trunks have so much texture, it looks like you can feel it just by looking at this image!
Space
Space is an area that has width, height, and depth that can be filled in. This picture of the parking lot outside of my apartment building shows space because although the cars are all about the same size, the further back you look, the smaller the cars seem.
Shapes
This picture of a vinyl case and the vinyl records from inside is perfect for showing both organic and geometric shapes. If your are looking at the individual shape of the record, it is a circle (geometric shape). If you look at the negative space in the photo, it is an organic shape.

Footprint Introductions

Kathryn Grimm

As an introduction of myself I created a footprint filled with things about me. I cut a shoe print out of construction paper and filled it with things all about myself. I used a few mediums, including marker, legos, and cut outs from magazines. I included the South Carolina state flag because I lived there for many years before moving to South Dakota, I have a drawing of my immediate family, as well as my daughter, Willow. All of these things pertain to different areas of my life and are a great way to get to know a little more about me.

Extension activity:

To get students back into school after a summer break, a great way to reintroduce ideas from last year is to incorporate it into an introduction. A "Figure Me Out" introduction will incorporate math concepts from the previous year while letting students introduce things about themselves. Students will introduce things about themselves that have a numerical answer, such as how many people are in my family, number of pets I own, and their age. For example, if I am doing this with a second grade class, we can use addition and subtraction for the answers. I am 20, so my age is 12+8. This is a good way for any grade to reintroduce themselves to concepts from the previous year before learning new material.
